Ad Spend Waste Calculator
See how much of your monthly ad budget leaks to fraud and broken tracking.
Roughly $8,696/month, $104,352 a year, is leaking before it can convert. Exclusion lists, consent-mode fixes and UTM hygiene usually claw most of it back.
Rates are estimates, pull invalid-click data from your ad platform and compare pixel vs. backend conversions to sharpen them.
About this calculator
Every ad account leaks some spend to invalid clicks and broken tracking, the question is how much, and whether it's worth fixing. This calculator combines an invalid/fraud click rate and a tracking leakage rate into one blended waste figure, so you can see the actual dollars, not just a percentage, before deciding whether exclusion lists and pixel audits are worth the engineering time.
How to use it
- Enter your monthly ad spend across the channel or account you're checking.
- Enter an invalid or fraud click rate, bot traffic, competitor clicks, accidental taps, pull this from your ad platform's invalid-click reporting if available.
- Enter a tracking leakage rate, conversions lost to consent-mode blocking, ITP/cookie restrictions, or broken UTMs.
- Read monthly and annual waste in currency, plus the working spend that's actually left to reach real buyers.
Methodology
The two leak rates are combined multiplicatively, not added: combined waste fraction = 1 − (1 − fraud rate) × (1 − leakage rate). This avoids double-counting when both leaks apply to overlapping spend, and keeps the combined rate from ever exceeding 100%.
Monthly waste is spend × combined waste fraction. Working spend is the remainder, spend minus waste, the portion actually reaching real prospects and being tracked correctly.
Annual waste is simply monthly waste × 12, useful for framing the size of the problem in board or budget conversations.
These rates are estimates you supply, the calculator doesn't measure your account. Pull actual invalid-click percentages from your ad platform's reporting, and compare pixel-reported conversions against backend/CRM conversions to estimate real tracking leakage.
FAQ
Google Ads and Meta both report invalid clicks or "click quality" flags in their platform reporting, though the figure they surface is usually already-filtered and understates true invalid traffic. Third-party click-fraud detection tools typically report higher, more realistic rates.
Adding two percentages can imply waste over 100% if both rates are high, and it double-counts spend that's affected by both issues at once. Multiplying the "surviving" fractions (1 minus each rate) and subtracting from 1 keeps the combined figure realistic no matter how high either input is.
It varies heavily by market and consent-banner design, but 10-20% conversion under-reporting from cookie consent, ITP, and ad blockers is common on typical Google Ads and Meta accounts that haven't implemented server-side tracking or Consent Mode v2.
IP and placement exclusion lists, negative keyword hygiene, and bot-traffic filtering address the fraud side. Server-side conversion tracking, Consent Mode v2, and first-party data collection address the leakage side. Neither is a one-time fix, both need a recurring audit cadence.
