Short answer
A fractional CMO is priced as a monthly retainer for a set number of hours a week. Published rate cards exist mainly in India, where one firm lists ₹1.5–2.5 lakh a month for 4–8 hours a week, ₹2.5–5 lakh for 10–15 hours and ₹5–8 lakh or more beyond that. Elsewhere, judge a quote against the full-time cost of the same hours, including employer on-costs.
How is a fractional CMO priced?
Almost always as a monthly retainer for an agreed scope and number of hours a week, sometimes preceded by a fixed-fee diagnostic. Hourly billing and fixed-fee projects exist too, but they suit occasional advice or a defined output rather than ongoing leadership.
| Model | How it is billed | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advisory retainer | Monthly fee for a few hours a week of senior direction | Founders who execute themselves and need a senior sounding board | No authority over budget or people, so advice may not turn into action |
| Embedded retainer | Monthly fee for roughly 10–15 hours a week, with decision rights | Companies with a marketer or agency that needs leadership | Scope creep into execution work the fee was not sized for |
| Multi-function retainer | Monthly fee for 15–20+ hours, often covering marketing and RevOps | Scaling teams with several agencies and board reporting | At this level, compare carefully with a full-time hire |
| Fixed-fee project | One price for a defined output: a GTM plan, an audit, a positioning reset | A clear question with an end date | No one owns implementation after the handover |
| Hourly with a cap | Hours used, up to a monthly maximum | Occasional, loosely defined questions | Hard to plan around; nobody is accountable for results |
| Diagnostic, then retainer | Fixed fee for a short diagnostic, then a retainer sized to what it finds | An ongoing need but an unclear problem | Make sure the diagnostic fee is credited or clearly priced |
The hours drive the price more than the title does. A fractional CMO at 6 hours a week and one at 18 hours a week are different products, even from the same person, and a quote only means something next to the scope and hours written beside it.
The tiers in the table follow the only detailed public rate card found for the market, published for India by upGrowth, a firm that sells fractional CMO services itself. For the US, UK and UAE no comparable published survey of fractional rates was found, so this page does not quote one. Instead it shows what the full-time alternative costs in each market, which is the comparison a fractional fee has to win.
What does a full-time CMO cost in the US, UK, UAE and India?
Salary is only the start. In the US, benefits are about 30% of total compensation; in the UK, employer National Insurance is 15% above £5,000 plus pension; in the UAE, gratuity accrues on basic salary; and in every market an executive search firm may charge a third of first-year pay.
| Market | Published pay | Main employer costs on top | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | $166,790 median wage, advertising, promotions and marketing managers (May 2025) | Benefits about 30% of total compensation | BLS; BLS ECEC |
| UK | £78,548 average base, marketing director (Payscale, 2026); £100,757 median (Ashdown Group, 2026) | Employer NI 15% above £5,000; pension at least 3% of qualifying earnings | Payscale; Ashdown Group; GOV.UK |
| UAE | AED 360,000 average base, CMO (Payscale) | End-of-service gratuity on basic salary; health insurance in Dubai; visas | Payscale; Gulf News |
| India | ₹60.6 lakh average CMO CTC (Naukri, 2024); ₹34.75 lakh average base (Payscale) | CTC already includes most employer costs | Storyboard18; Payscale |
Two costs rarely appear in a salary comparison. The first is the search: Korn Ferry reports its executive search fees as generally one-third of first-year cash compensation (Korn Ferry), and SHRM puts the average US executive cost per hire at $35,879 (SHRM). The second is tenure: Spencer Stuart puts the average S&P 500 CMO tenure at 4.1 years (Spencer Stuart), so the search cost recurs.
Each market has its own page with the full detail: UK costs in £ with National Insurance and pension, UAE costs in AED with gratuity, and Indian pricing in ₹ with published fractional tiers.
Is a fractional CMO quote fair? Check it against the full-time cost
Price the same hours at the full-time rate. Take the full-time cost with on-costs and search fee, scale it to the hours a week you need, and compare it with the fractional fee. Paying more per hour than a full-time hire is normal for senior part-time work; paying close to the whole full-time cost is not.

Default: BLS median for marketing managers, $166,790
Benefits are about 30% of total US compensation (BLS), 42.9% on top of wages
Example only: enter the quote you are comparing
Formula: full-time cost per year = salary × (1 + on-costs %) + salary × search fee % ÷ expected tenure. Same hours at full-time cost = full-time cost × hours a week ÷ 40. Premium per hour = fractional fee per year ÷ same-hours cost − 1. The result is flagged when the premium is above 200% or the fee is above 70% of the full-time cost; these thresholds are a reading aid, not a market benchmark. Defaults: US, BLS median wage for advertising, promotions and marketing managers ($166,790) with on-costs of 42.9% because benefits are about 30% of total compensation (BLS ECEC), and Korn Ferry’s one-third search fee. UK, Payscale’s marketing director average base (£78,548) with about 15.7% for employer NI above £5,000 and the 3% minimum pension on qualifying earnings, and a 25% fee. UAE, Payscale’s CMO average base (AED 360,000) with 5.75% for gratuity (21 days of basic a year; insurance and visas not included), and a 25% fee. India, the Naukri average CMO CTC of ₹60,57,574 (Storyboard18), with no on-costs because CTC includes them, and a 20% fee. Fractional fees are examples only: enter the quote you have.
A fractional leader carries no search fee, benefits or notice period on your side, can start within weeks, and can be scaled down or ended on short notice. The useful questions are whether the hours match the work and whether the total stays well below the full-time cost. What should a fractional CMO retainer include, and what is extra?
A retainer usually covers strategy, budget allocation, agency and team direction, reporting and a set number of meetings. Ad spend, agencies, freelancers, software and one-off builds such as tracking fixes or CRM rebuilds are normally extra, as are taxes on the fee.
- Positioning, ICP and the marketing plan
- Budget allocation across channels and agencies
- Briefing and directing agencies and the team
- KPI scorecard and a monthly performance review
- Hiring support for marketing roles
- A weekly operating meeting with the founder or CEO
- Media spend on Google, Meta, LinkedIn and others
- Agency, freelancer and contractor fees
- Software: CRM seats, analytics, automation
- One-off builds: tracking, CRM rebuilds, landing pages
- Taxes on the fee (GST in India, VAT where it applies)
- Travel, if any in-person time is agreed

How do you know if a fractional CMO is worth the fee?
Compare the annual fee with the money it directs. If a fractional CMO manages your media and agency spend, the fee pays for itself when better allocation saves or earns more than the fee over a year. Agree in advance which number will show that: CAC, CAC payback, pipeline or contribution margin.
A worked example, with round numbers for illustration only: a retainer of $6,000 a month is $72,000 a year. A company spending $40,000 a month on media spends $480,000 a year. The retainer covers itself if better allocation saves 15% of that spend, or if it produces the same revenue at a lower CAC. On a media budget of $10,000 a month the same fee needs a much larger improvement, which is why the engagement should be sized to the money under management.
The same arithmetic works in any currency. The questions to agree before signing are the metric, its starting value, how it will be measured and when it will be reviewed. The ROI guide for fractional CMOs goes further, and the CMO benchmarks report shows what marketing leaders are commonly measured on.
- Agree one primary metric (for example CAC payback or qualified pipeline) and its starting value
- Write the hours, decision rights and deliverables into the agreement
- Review results and scope every quarter, with the right to resize or end
- Keep ad accounts, analytics and CRM in your company’s name
What changes in each market?
The fee structure is similar everywhere; the comparison, the taxes and the contract details differ.
How is pricing set with Rahul D Sarker?
There is no public rate card. Every engagement starts with the two-week Revenue Diagnostic at a fixed $1,500 (₹90,000 for companies in India), credited in full if a fractional CMO engagement follows. The retainer is then priced against the scope the diagnostic defines.
Rahul D Sarker is a fractional CMO and RevOps consultant based in Kolkata, working remotely with growth-stage companies in India and abroad. The diagnostic uses read-only access to your ad accounts, analytics and CRM and ends with a written document naming the constraint holding revenue back and a 90-day plan. If a retainer follows, its hours and scope come from that plan rather than from a standard package. The Revenue Diagnostic page describes it in full, and how to hire a fractional CMO covers the steps from first call to signed agreement.

Questions about fractional CMO cost
How much does a fractional CMO cost?
It depends on the hours and scope. The only detailed published rate card found, for India, lists ₹1.5–2.5 lakh a month for 4–8 hours a week, ₹2.5–5 lakh for 10–15 hours and ₹5–8 lakh or more for 15–20+ hours (upGrowth, vendor-published). For other markets, compare a quote with the full-time cost of the same hours.
What is a typical fractional CMO hourly rate?
Most fractional CMOs price by the month, not the hour. To compare, divide the monthly fee by the hours a week times about 4.33. Expect a premium per hour over a full-time salary, because the fractional leader carries no benefits, notice period or search fee on your side.
Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?
In total, usually yes, because you buy only the hours you need and avoid on-costs and search fees. Per hour, usually no. If a fractional quote approaches the full-time cost, a full-time hire or a smaller scope is likely better value.
What does a full-time CMO cost in the US?
The BLS median wage for advertising, promotions and marketing managers was $166,790 in May 2025, and benefits are about 30% of total US compensation, so the employer cost is roughly $238,000 before any search fee. Senior CMOs at larger companies earn more.
What does a full-time marketing director cost in the UK?
Payscale lists an average base of £78,548 and Ashdown Group a national median of £100,757 in 2026. Employers add National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year and at least 3% pension on qualifying earnings.
What does a full-time CMO cost in the UAE?
Payscale lists an average CMO base of AED 360,000 a year in the UAE. Employers also accrue end-of-service gratuity on basic salary and pay for health insurance in Dubai, visas and often a search fee.
What does a full-time CMO cost in India?
Naukri data reported by Storyboard18 put the average CMO CTC at ₹60.6 lakh in 2024, and Payscale shows an average base of ₹34.75 lakh. Large listed companies pay far more.
What is not included in a fractional CMO fee?
Usually media spend, agency and freelancer fees, software, one-off projects such as tracking or CRM rebuilds, and taxes on the fee such as GST or VAT.
How long is a typical fractional CMO engagement?
Commonly 3 to 12 months, reviewed quarterly. Short engagements suit a defined problem; longer ones suit companies that need ongoing leadership until they hire full time.
What does Rahul D Sarker charge?
