Short answer

A fractional marketing director is a senior marketing leader who runs strategy, budget and the team part time, usually 8 to 20 hours a week, under a service agreement rather than a UK employment contract. That avoids employer National Insurance, pension and search fees. Rahul D Sarker provides this remotely from Kolkata, India, overlapping with the UK working morning.

What is a fractional marketing director, and how does a remote one work?

A fractional marketing director is a part-time marketing leader who owns strategy, budget and agency or team direction for a company, under a service agreement. In the UK the role is often titled marketing director rather than CMO; the job is the same. In a remote model the leader works from another country during an agreed overlap window.

The fractional model itself is explained on the main fractional CMO page. This page covers what is specific to UK companies: the on-costs of employing a director in the UK, how the off-payroll working rules (IR35) fit, the UK rules on marketing data and email, and how the working day lines up with India.

It describes one specific arrangement: a remote engagement from India. Rahul D Sarker is based in Kolkata. There is no UK office and no in-person presence is promised; meetings run on video, work happens in your own systems, and the engagement is governed by a written scope. For many UK founders that is the point: a senior leader who owns the marketing number without adding a director to the payroll.

Full-time marketing director, employed in the UK
  • Employment contract and PAYE payroll
  • Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000
  • Workplace pension contributions
  • 28 days’ paid holiday a year as a statutory minimum
  • Search fee and months of hiring before day one
Remote fractional marketing director from India
  • Service agreement with defined scope and notice
  • Monthly fee sized to the hours you need
  • No PAYE, employer NI or pension on your side
  • Starts after a two-week diagnostic, not a search
  • Video meetings in the UK morning overlap
When a remote leader is the wrong choice

If the role needs regular in-person presence in the UK (board meetings in the room, trade shows, retail or distributor relationships, managing a large office team day to day), hire or contract someone based in the UK. A remote fractional marketing director suits companies whose marketing runs mainly through digital channels, a CRM and agencies that can be directed online.

Why do so many UK companies need marketing leadership without a full-time director?

Because almost every UK business is small or medium-sized. The government’s Business Population Estimates put the UK private sector at 5.7 million businesses at the start of 2025, with SMEs making up 99.85% of them, 60% of private sector employment and 51% of turnover.

Most of those companies will never employ a marketing director full time, yet many of them spend real money on agencies, ads and software, and someone has to decide where it goes and whether it works. That gap is where a fractional marketing director fits: senior judgement on positioning, budget and measurement, sized to the company rather than to a full-time salary.

The common symptoms are familiar. A founder still approves every campaign. Two or three agencies each report their own numbers. A capable marketing manager has nobody senior to plan with. Spend goes up, and nobody can say which part produces revenue. Those are leadership and systems problems, and they are the first things a fractional engagement deals with.

Where to start if this sounds familiar

Size the budget first with how much a startup should spend on marketing, then check whether spend can be traced to revenue with attribution modelling. If neither is clear, that is the first job for any marketing leader, fractional or full time.

How much does a full-time marketing director cost a UK company?

Payscale puts the average UK marketing director base salary at £78,548 in 2026, and Ashdown Group’s 2026 salary guide puts the national median at £100,757 and the London median at £115,000. The employer’s cost is higher than salary: employer National Insurance is 15% above £5,000 a year, auto-enrolment pension adds at least 3% of qualifying earnings, and executive search firms typically charge a third of first-year pay.

London median (Ashdown Group, 2026)£115,000
UK national median (Ashdown Group, 2026)£100,757
UK average base (Payscale, 2026)£78,548
Source: Ashdown Group (recruiter)[2]

The two sources measure different things. Payscale’s figure is based on 193 self-reported salary profiles, with a base range of £46k to £117k (Payscale); Ashdown Group is a recruiter whose guide reflects the roles it places, with a national upper quartile of £140,184 (Ashdown Group). Use them as a range and replace them with the package you would actually offer.

On top of salary, a UK employer carries costs that a contractor relationship does not:

  • Employer National Insurance. For 2026 to 2027, employers pay 15% on earnings above the secondary threshold of £5,000 a year. Eligible employers can claim the Employment Allowance of £10,500 against their bill (GOV.UK).
  • Workplace pension. Under automatic enrolment the employer pays at least 3% of qualifying earnings, the band between £6,240 and £50,270 a year, which includes bonuses (GOV.UK). Many employers pay more, or on full salary.
  • Holiday. Full-time workers are entitled to at least 28 days’ paid annual leave a year, 5.6 weeks (GOV.UK). It is part of the salary, but it is time the role is not covered.
  • Apprenticeship Levy. Employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million pay 0.5% of it, less a £15,000 allowance (GOV.UK).
  • Search fees. Korn Ferry, one of the largest search firms, reports its executive search fees as generally one-third of the placed candidate’s estimated first-year cash compensation (Korn Ferry annual report, fiscal 2026). Smaller recruiters often charge less; the calculator defaults to 25%.

Formula: annual employment cost = salary + bonus + employer NI + employer pension + other benefits + search fee ÷ expected tenure. Employer NI = 15% × (salary + bonus − £5,000), the 2026 to 2027 rate and secondary threshold from GOV.UK; the Employment Allowance (£10,500 for eligible employers) is not deducted. Employer pension = pension % × qualifying earnings, the part of salary plus bonus between £6,240 and £50,270 (GOV.UK automatic enrolment band; 3% is the legal minimum, and some employers pay on full salary). Search fee = fee % × base salary. The default salary is Payscale’s UK marketing director average base of £78,548 (2026). The 25% search fee is below the one-third Korn Ferry reports for executive search. Bonus, benefits and the fractional fee are examples to replace with your own figures, not benchmarks. Excludes the Apprenticeship Levy, equipment and office costs.

With the calculator’s defaults (Payscale’s £78,548 salary, a 10% bonus, the minimum pension, a 25% search fee spread over three years and no other benefits), a full-time marketing director costs about £106,480 a year. The fractional fee default is an example only: replace it with the quote you are comparing. Does IR35 apply to a fractional marketing director?

IR35, the off-payroll working rules, decides whether a contractor working through an intermediary should be taxed like an employee. For a medium or large UK client, the client decides the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s intermediary decides. A contractor based outside the UK raises different questions, so check the position with your accountant.

HMRC’s guidance says that in most cases the client is responsible for determining the employment status of the worker, and that for small clients outside the public sector the worker’s intermediary is responsible instead. The size rules apply only to clients (GOV.UK).

For a fractional engagement, the practical points are the same whoever makes the call:

  • Write the scope as outcomes, not hours of supervision. A fractional director delivers a plan, decisions and reporting; they are not managed day to day like an employee.
  • Keep the right of substitution and control realistic. The written agreement should match how the work actually happens.
  • Use the provider’s own tools and accounts only for their own work. Your ad accounts, analytics and CRM stay in your company’s name, with named user access.

Where the contractor is not UK resident and works from abroad, the analysis changes: HMRC’s manual covers cross-border cases separately (HMRC Employment Status Manual, ESM10026), and tax treaties may apply. This page is general information, not tax advice: confirm the treatment for your company with your accountant before signing.

Not tax advice

Status depends on the actual working arrangement, not the contract’s label. HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) tool and your accountant are the right places to confirm it.

What do UK GDPR and PECR mean for marketing?

Two sets of rules shape UK marketing data: UK GDPR for personal data in general, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) for marketing emails, texts and calls. Under PECR you need consent to email individuals with marketing, except for the soft opt-in for existing customers, while emails to companies are allowed with an easy way to opt out.

The ICO’s guidance on electronic mail marketing sets out the core rules (ICO):

  • Individuals. Marketing emails and texts need the person’s specific consent, typically an opt-in box.
  • Soft opt-in. You can email existing customers about your own similar products if you got their details during a sale or negotiation, offered an opt-out then, and offer one in every message. It does not cover prospects or bought-in lists.
  • Corporate subscribers. You can email companies, LLPs and government bodies, but sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals. Keep a do-not-email list of businesses that opt out.

The ICO notes that its guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, so check the current version before relying on it.

A remote engagement adds one more question: someone in India accessing UK customer data is a cross-border flow. Handle it like any vendor access: named accounts with the least access needed, no exports to personal devices, access removed at exit, and the processing purpose written into the agreement. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

  1. CaptureForms state the purpose; consent boxes are unticked by default.
  2. RecordConsent, source and date stored on the CRM record.
  3. SeparateIndividuals, customers on soft opt-in and companies tagged apart.
  4. AccessNamed users, least privilege, vendor access logged.
  5. Honour opt-outsUnsubscribes and objections synced to email tools and ad audiences.

India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK in winter (GMT) and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer (BST). A 9:00 am meeting in London is 2:30 pm in Kolkata in winter and 1:30 pm in summer, so the UK morning to early afternoon is the shared working window. How do you choose a fractional marketing director in the UK?

Judge any candidate, UK-based or remote, on evidence of revenue outcomes, the systems they will leave behind, straight answers about location and hours, and an agreement that keeps your accounts, data and IP in your company’s name.

  • Ask for case studies with numbers and the engagement model used, and read them for what changed in revenue or cost, not activity
  • Ask where the person is based, which hours they overlap with yours and whether any in-person time is included
  • Ask how they handle UK GDPR and PECR in lead capture, email and ad audiences
  • Ask how the arrangement is set up for IR35, and check it with your accountant
  • Ask what the handover pack contains if the engagement ends
  • Claims of a UK office or UK team that cannot be verified
  • Ad accounts set up under the provider’s own business account
  • Long lock-ins with no quarterly review
  • Reporting in reach and followers with no link to leads or revenue

Myth Fractional means junior or a generalist.

Reality Fractional describes the hours, not the seniority. The role should carry budget and team authority.

Myth A fractional director is just a consultant with a monthly invoice.

Reality A consultant advises on a defined question. A fractional director holds ongoing authority over strategy, budget and the people doing the work, and is accountable for results.

Myth A UK company needs a UK-based marketing director.

Reality It needs one who understands its customers and channels. In-person presence matters for some roles; for digital-led companies a remote leader working with UK executors can do the job.

Questions about fractional marketing directors in the UK

What does a fractional marketing director do?

A fractional marketing director leads marketing strategy, budget allocation, agency and team direction, and reporting on a part-time basis, usually 8 to 20 hours a week. The role carries decision authority and accountability for results, unlike a consultant who only advises.

Is a fractional marketing director the same as a fractional CMO?

Yes, in practice. UK companies often title the senior marketing role marketing director, while US companies tend to say CMO. Both describe a part-time senior leader who owns marketing strategy, budget and results.

How much does a full-time marketing director cost in the UK?

Payscale lists an average base salary of £78,548 in 2026, and Ashdown Group’s 2026 guide gives a national median of £100,757 and £115,000 in London. Employers also pay 15% employer National Insurance above £5,000, at least 3% pension on qualifying earnings, and often a search fee.

What is the difference between a fractional and an interim marketing director?

An interim director usually fills a full-time gap for a fixed period, for example while a permanent hire is found. A fractional director works part time on an ongoing basis, often for companies that do not need a full-time leader yet.

Does IR35 apply to a fractional marketing director?

It can. For medium and large UK clients the client decides the worker’s status under the off-payroll working rules; for small clients outside the public sector the worker’s intermediary decides. Contractors based outside the UK raise different questions, so confirm the position with your accountant.

Can a fractional marketing director work remotely for a UK company from India?

Yes. India is 5.5 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 4.5 hours in summer, so the UK morning to early afternoon is a shared working window. Rahul D Sarker works this way from Kolkata, with weekly video reviews and written decisions between meetings. There is no UK office and no in-person presence is included.

Can we send marketing emails to UK businesses without consent?

Under PECR you can email corporate subscribers such as companies and LLPs without prior consent, as long as you identify yourself and offer an easy opt-out. Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals and need consent, or the soft opt-in if they are existing customers.

What is a part-time marketing director?

Another name for a fractional marketing director: a senior leader who works a set number of days or hours a month for one company, often alongside other clients.

Who owns the ad accounts and data in a fractional engagement?

Your company should. Ad accounts, analytics, CRM and content should be set up in the company’s name, with the fractional director given named user access that is removed when the engagement ends.

Why is this page only for UK companies?

Because the costs, tax rules and data rules on it are UK-specific, and the request forms take UK (+44) numbers only. Companies elsewhere can use the main fractional CMO page.

How does an engagement start?

With a 30-minute scoping call in the UK morning, then the two-week Revenue Diagnostic at a fixed $1,500, credited in full if a fractional engagement follows. The diagnostic uses read-only access and ends with a written constraint document and a 90-day plan.
