Short answer

A fractional CMO in India is a senior marketing leader who owns strategy, budget and team direction part time, typically 4 to 20 hours a week, for a monthly retainer. Published Indian rates run from about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh a month, against an average full-time CMO CTC of ₹60.6 lakh. Rahul D Sarker works this way from Kolkata with companies across India.

What does a fractional CMO do for an Indian company?

A fractional CMO owns the marketing plan, the budget split across channels and agencies, the scorecard and the weekly review, part time and under a service agreement. Your marketers, agencies and freelancers execute; the fractional CMO decides, directs and is accountable for the number.

The model is explained in full in the fractional CMO guide. This page covers what is specific to Indian companies: the cost against a full-time hire in rupees, the market conditions a marketing leader in India has to plan for, and how an engagement runs.

Most Indian companies that consider a fractional CMO have the same pattern. The founder still approves campaigns and spends evenings in the ad account. One or two agencies run paid media and report their own numbers. There is a capable marketing manager, or a performance marketer, with nobody senior to plan with. Spend has grown, revenue has not grown as fast, and nobody can say with confidence which part of the funnel is the problem.

That is a leadership and systems gap, not a channel gap, and it is what a fractional CMO is for.

Which Indian companies hire fractional CMOs?

Mostly startups and established SMEs that spend real money on marketing but are not ready for a full-time CMO. India had 1,97,692 DPIIT-recognised startups by 31 October 2025 and 7.30 crore enterprises on the Udyam portals by December 2025, and about 17,000 LinkedIn users in India held a fractional CMO title in January 2024 (afaqs).

The best fit is usually a company with roughly ₹5–100 crore in revenue and ₹2 lakh or more a month in marketing spend, with someone in place to execute. Below that, a fractional CMO often has too little budget to direct; well above it, a full-time CMO and team usually make more sense.

How much does a fractional CMO cost in India compared with a full-time CMO?

One Indian firm publishes ₹1.5–2.5 lakh a month for 4–8 hours a week of advisory work, ₹2.5–5 lakh for 10–15 hours of embedded leadership and ₹5–8 lakh or more for 15–20+ hours. A full-time CMO averages ₹60.6 lakh CTC (Naukri, 2024) and ₹34.75 lakh base (Payscale), with large listed companies far higher.

Read the two together. An embedded retainer at the top of its tier costs about as much a year as the average CMO CTC, but without a search fee (Michael Page quoted 20–30% of the package for C-suite searches to Outlook Business, in a 2013 report), a notice period or a seat that is full time whether or not the work is. A multi-function retainer can cost more than an average full-time CMO; at that level, compare carefully.

What does a marketing leader in India have to plan for that others do not?

Four things shape Indian marketing more than most playbooks admit: the DPDP Rules on personal data, cash on delivery and return-to-origin in D2C, WhatsApp as a sales channel, and an audience that is overwhelmingly on Android.

  1. Data protection. The DPDP Rules were notified on 14 November 2025, with obligations phased in over 12 to 18 months, and the Act’s penalties reach ₹250 crore. Lead forms, CRM records, WhatsApp lists and ad audiences built from customer data all need consent recorded and a way to honour withdrawals. See consent mode and the DPDP Act.
  2. COD and RTO. At the November 2025 festive peak, 39.2% of D2C orders came back as return to origin (Unicommerce), while 55% of D2C orders were prepaid by June 2026. A leader who optimises on placed orders rather than delivered orders will scale the wrong customers. See D2C ROAS benchmarks in India.
  3. WhatsApp. For many Indian businesses the sale happens in a chat. Meta charges for each marketing message (₹0.8631 before GST on its India rate card from 1 October 2026), and conversations leave web analytics behind unless they are tracked in the CRM. See WhatsApp Business API pricing.
  4. Android first. iOS is a small share of Indian phones, so Apple’s privacy changes matter less here than in the US, while page speed on mid-range Android phones and patchy networks matter more.
What this means for the plan

Measure delivered revenue and qualified leads, not placed orders and form fills; record consent everywhere personal data enters; and treat WhatsApp as a tracked sales channel. The D2C and e-commerce benchmarks for India and the marketing measurement benchmarks have the figures behind each point.
